“…. hella long rant about work…”
Many moons a go I’d posted on this blog a chronological list of jobs I’ve held… a recap.. and some comments here and there… trust me this is leading somewhere …. i think
Shidy’s Employment History
- 3 mth in ’91(or ’92):
KWE – Kintetsu World Express (traffic/despatch clerk) – $950
Was waiting for ‘O’ Level Results. Might as well earn some cash.
- 3 mth after KWE job:
Airborne Express (Data entry) – $1000
After O’s Results .Decided to go Poly instead of JC so had some more time to spare. 12 hour shifts 6:00p.m. to 6:00a.m. Alternate days off. It was a good deal.
- ’94 to ’95:
7-11 (Store Clerk Permanent Night Shift) – $7.00/hr (took home about $800 ++)
This was when 7-11 was still the real deal not some franchise. Needed cash to go through school. Got fired in ’95. Covered up for a girl who stole from the cash box. They tried to nail it on me but got no proof. So they let me go. Last I heard the girl married the store manager. Suriati her name was, if I’m not mistaken. If you wondered which outlet I was working out of, It’s the one nearest to Tampines Interchange Opposite the HDB Office. STORE 13. Also still the record-holder of the most number of calls from a single location in Singapore to a Radio station (Heart 91.3).The night jockey (R.J) even dubbed the 3:00a.m – 6:00a.m time slot the 7-11 calltime. Store 13 made it on air EVERYNIGHT. Even customers called from our phone.
- ’95 to ’98:
Fundazzle (Indoor Play guide/Party Co-ordinator) – $6.50/hr + $20/party.
At that time this was the very FIRST and largest Indoor Playcentre in Singapore. Situated on Pasir Ris Dr 3. If you happen to pass what is now NTUC DOWNTOWN EAST, you’d notice a drive in porch of some sort on the side facing the school. That whole building used to be a playcentre/kindergarden under the now defunct Family Edutainment Concepts. The ground level was an indoor play centre with them ball pits and climbing tubes and all and the second floor (which is now NTUCCLUB Offices) was Kinderworld Kindergarten. I was one of the pioneer batches and it really irked some of the full time staff cuz i’d take home almost $1500 a month. The only reason they did not take me on full time was because, well I was waiting for NS. This is where I met a certain Ms Marinna . whom I might say had a hand in changing my life .. maybe .. maybe not. This time period also includes my NS years where I’d come in on the odd weekend to conduct children’s parties. This easily added $150.00 CASH a week to my measly $350 Serviceman allowance.
- ’98:
QuestXone (Operations Supervisor) – $1500.
After I had finished my duty to the nation, I was called upon by Marinna to join her in a new company. Apparently Family Edutainment Concepts liquidated. The two partners (Ricky Tan-Chairman of the Chinese Merchants Association and brother-in-law Robert Chua-CEO ACE Daikin Singapore) had a disagreement and went seperate ways. Ricky Tan took his Kinderworld Franchise and set up QuestXone. One thing about Marinna is she is a control freak and it took her quite some time to adjust to the fact that we are now on the same level and I am no longer her SUBORDINATE. Anyways we were brought into the fold as a TEAM. Unfortunately, there were some issues and me and QuestXone parted ways.
- ’99:
Set up a cyber cafe at Eastpoint Mall. I did all the material Purchasing for my boss and all the ground work. I was relieved of duties when they found I interacted too much with the customers. They said it was unprofessional behaviour. Cafe closed 6 mths after I left.
- ’99 – 2000:
NTUC CLUB ( Operations Executive Events and Special Projects) – $1500 promised.
I REALLY LIKED THIS PLACE ..Fun pple to work with .Yeah Marinna was there too, she mellowed a bit and we had a helluva lot of fun… And I was doing what I loved. Planning events, activities for children, workshops, promos, it’s in my blood. Ronnie had cleared to offer me a much higher pay package then above. During my interview I was promised $1500 as J.A.W.C.T. refused to go higher. In my appointment letter however it stated my starting as $1100. He had played me out. I confronted him and he said that upon confirmation the figure would be raised to the agreed figure. He held back my confirmation for 6 months. Yeah that’s 9 months of backbreaking work. No Overtime and there were times when Marinna was sent out on Course (the Management course I was supposed to go to but never did) management had me cover the blank shifts instead of the other executives/supervisors available. Yeah that means Full shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00p.m. EVERY DAY. But I LOVED the work. I felt ALIVE. I was patient and approached J.A.W.C.T for my confirmation. He delayed it some more. By then I’ve had enough and took an offer to do a Networking Contract. I had given them 2 weeks notice, and I had 7 days leave and 11 days Off-in-lieu to clear and I had applied for 10 days Off. They refused saying I had to SERVE OUT my 14 days notice. J.A.W.C.T turned up later that day saying I could Leave that day. So I packed my stuff and left. I found out later that he forfeited ALL MY LEAVE and OFF DAYS in exchange for leaving on the same day. Which i wasn’t told. I was only paid 1/2 months pay that month which left me seething mad. Technically Good old’ Jon Wan fucked me of among all things, 15 days regular pay for that month, my annual leave , and 11 days off in lieu, which if converted to cash reimbursement would be…equivalent to a month’s pay WHICH he also fucked me over for. And he had the guile to boast about(or so I’ve been told) to some people. All I can say is that the best things I got out of that experience were that i made a lot of new friends, and I met Ade.
As this post was written in 2004 and I was dating Ade at that time, I can now safely say that even though we had good times, Ade was a total bitch and a cheating whore.. :P.
- 2000:
Wyn Systems & Communications Pte Ltd (Network Engineer) – $1500.
Al roped me into this one. He had been working as a Technician for a while there and they needed a Network Engineer as they had won a contract for Service at INVENSYS SYSTEMS. The downside to this job is that it was a 2 hour commute EACH WAY daily for me. I mean From Simei to Pandan Road. MAJOR bummer. Stopped working cuz contract ended- 6 mths.
- 2000:
- Fong Shen Mould & Precision Engrg Pte Ltd (Jr Draughtsman) – $750.
Ok I know it’s like a drastic pay cut. But hey, at least it’s a job. Boring work . Sit all day facing a P.C. AutoCAD… Unigraphix.. *YAWN* I stayed only for 3 mths .. I Couldn’t take it my brain was rotting in a cubicle. Beside while working here I was also moonlighting.
- 2000:
Bernie’s BFD (DJ/Soundtech) – $2500
HELL YEAH.. HELLA GOOD TIMES BABY.
But yeaps.. it WAS tiring and was one of the contributing factors why I left the day job. I mean my schedule was.
7:00 a.m – Rise and Shine
8:00 a.m – Work starts at Fong Shen
5:30 p.m – Work ends at Fong Shen
6:30 p.m – Work Starts at BFD
1:00 a.m – Work ENDS at BFD
2:00 a.m – Reach home and ZZZZZ
and well my shift ends at 3:00 a.m on friday nights and saturday nights. and I work sundays too. I got screwed ( again?!!) when the agent that booked me dissapeared and my contract was not renewed. I played my last night at BFD’s on New Years Eve , 31 December 2000.
- mid 2001 – present day (as of 2004 post date):
Pioneer Logistics (SIN) Pte Ltd (Export Operations Occifer*snigger*)
Yeaps and that’s what led me here today. The pay ain’t ALL that but it pays the bills at least; well Just barely. This was meant to be a TEMP job. My MOM (yes my mom) had an opening where she worked (yes I work with my mom) and brought me in as a temp replacement for the guy who used to work here. There were many that came to replace good ol’ Raymond, but none stayed for more then a month. They couldn’t take El Diaper’s shenanigans. So I guess this temp gig turned out to be a 3 year temp gig. Pfshh Don’t get me wrong, I love my mom and all but I just don’t LIKE her.(yeah honey I know it’s your line bear with me on this one ayes?).
I kinda stuck with the logisitics gig for another 5 years. Right smack dab in the middle of the whole Lehmann Brothers meltdown 2009, the boss calls me into his office tells me that Pioneer was shutting down operations in Singapore. Our last day was 31st July 2009; a week before my wedding day. So that one expands
- October 2004 blogpost – July 2009:
Pioneer Logistics (SIN) Pte Ltd (Export Operations Occifer*snigger*)
Grew from strength to strength. The pay got better. While I was there I did a few side jobs which kept me busy.I was working “rubber” time. Some of the side jobs include DGR (Dangerous Goods Declarations).. and most notably a packing detail with Apple computers. I packed their items for shipping in pallet form. $15 a pallet and they ship out 10 pallets at a time.. 3 times a week.. good money hor? was paid enough to save for a wedding and live realtively comfortable but all good things had to end yeah..
I got married … I was thankful the shutdown was near the wedding date. Most if not all of the stuff for the wedding was already paid for.. Even the honeymoon hotel room. Had the short honeymoon in Phuket and I received a call when we got back. It was for an interview at MCYS. which leads to…
- 8th September 2009 – Present Day
Social Development Network – Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports
(Management Support Officer/Executive Assistant)
I never recalled sending out a CV to MCYS. So I was pleasantly surprised when I was called for the interview. It was almost like a belated birthday present when I started work. The people were awesome.. well most of them are. I made new friends all great persons. But I also was in the company of persons I began to loathe. Once again I ENJOY the WORK.. but I HATE the people I work with…work for.. WHATEVER..
I have been on the lookout to move on from here as I feel right here…. right now…. I am heading nowhere under incompetent (imho) higher management who fail to see what’s really going on in the office.
So Ting Wei directs me to an oppurtunity to “move on”. Lo and behold it is NTUC Club again. I’d just sent out my CV to them and I hope for a swift reply. One of the positions i put up for was for something related to the Explorer Kids playcenter, the one industry next to Airfreight which I’d had LOADS of experience with. Maybe time to come full circle. I Just hope the whole J.A.W.C.T debacle doesn’t pop it’s ugly ass head to bite me in the ass. Honestly. there are times where I can’t stand coming to work anymore.
well sorry for the rant…and for whoever 5 persons that read my posts to read all that text..
till next time..
“…jumpstart…”
I guess I have been away from here long enough. Life has settled down to a more.. err “routine-able routine” . if you get what I trying to say.. let’s see.. this is going to be difficult..putting my thoughts down to words I mean.. maybe I’ll just let it simmer for a bit..
To start i’ve stopped smoking.. that’s good yes? I still do not take pictures as often as I should or as often as I would like to. Gotta start with Photo Friday again.. yeah right..but I have been invited to go on a walkalbout somewhere coming months.. so that’s a start..
ho humm.. dunno what to write.. gosh this is hard.. how did i ever rant so much before.. well going swimming later.. cheerios!
“..Firefly..”
I caught wind of this series through the guys a Applegeeks. They’ve, well Ananth has talked about it a fair bit in the past, so I decided to just grab the season. It kind of reminds me that i like the visual style that Joss Whedon applies. Maybe it’s just me. It’s seems to be a shame that only one season was made. It had a very good script.. an excellent cast. Again, even Reets watched the episodes with me. We are like 2 episodes shy of the season ending, then we’re gonna watch Serenity, which is a continuation of the Firefly series set a few years after the last episode of the season. I couldn’t help but find most of the cast very familiar. One for sure is Summer Glau, which we all remember from the Sarah Connor Chronicles as the female terminator that was sent to protect John Connor. Then I realised that Firefly was made in 2005. LOL. so she was in Firefly FIRST then SCC… Also Ron Glass.. Just cannot put a finger on where I’d seen him before.but yeah they were familiar faces but .. anyway.. If you can find 14 hrs of spare time.. do watch Firefly.. the entire first (and only) season is available on DVD.
